The menopause is a natural process that all women go through. While some women sail through it, others suffer from a range of related symptoms and problems that can significantly impact quality of life.
CBD and HRT
Hormone replacement therapy (HRT) is the traditional medical treatment for menopause symptoms, but health concerns and potential side effects mean that it is not suitable for everyone. Thankfully, CBD, or cannabidiol, is available as a natural alternative to HRT with many women reporting improved menopause symptoms after taking it.
CBD is a natural plant compound derived from the hemp plant. It interacts with the body’s endocannabinoid system (ECS), which is responsible for regulating various functions, including mood, appetite, and pain. The ECS also helps regulate the female reproductive system, and CBD may therefore help modulate the hormonal changes that occur during menopause.
Studies show that CBD can interact with the ECS and help regulate the levels of oestrogen and progesterone, which in turn can help alleviate some of the symptoms of menopause. CBD may also have anti-inflammatory properties, which can help reduce inflammation and pain associated with menopause.
In addition, CBD may also have neuroprotective properties, which can help protect against the cognitive decline that can occur during menopause. CBD has been shown to have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, which can help protect the brain from damage and inflammation.
One of the most significant benefits of using CBD instead of HRT is the lack of side effects. HRT has been linked to an increased risk of breast cancer, blood clots, stroke, and heart disease. CBD, on the other hand, is considered safe and has very few side effects.
Studies on CBD and the Menopause
Several studies have investigated the effects of CBD on menopause symptoms, and the results have been promising.
A 2020 study published in Maturitas found that CBD improved sleep, reduced anxiety and depression, and improved quality of life in 87 women with menopause-related symptoms. The participants were given 25 milligrams of CBD in capsule form each day. After eight weeks, the participants reported significant improvements in sleep quality, mood, and overall quality of life.
Another 2020 study published in the Journal of Women’s Health found that CBD improved sexual function in 27 women with sexual dysfunction related to menopause. The participants were given a CBD-infused vaginal suppository each day for four weeks. After the treatment period, the participants reported significant improvements in sexual function, including increased arousal and lubrication.
A 2021 study published in the Journal of Endocrine Society found that CBD reduced hot flashes and improved sleep in 44 women with menopause-related symptoms. The participants were given 300 milligrams of CBD in capsule form each day for four weeks. After the treatment period, the participants reported significant reductions in the frequency and severity of hot flashes and improvements in sleep quality.
Another 2021 study published in Menopause found that CBD improved mood and reduced anxiety in 30 women with menopause-related symptoms. The participants took 25 milligrams of CBD in capsule form each day for eight weeks. After the treatment period, the participants reported significant improvements in mood and reductions in anxiety. A 2022 study on menopausal and perimenopausal women showed similarly impressive results.
As you can see, CBD can be enormously beneficial for menopausal women. One of the most significant benefits of using CBD instead of HRT is the lack of side effects. CBD is considered safe and has very few side effects, making it an attractive alternative for women who cannot or do not want to take HRT. Remember to discuss any medical concerns with your doctor before embarking on a course of treatment.
